5 Books you should own to Improve your photography

5 Books you should own to improve your photography

I love great photography books! Over the years I have collected many and I get a lot of pleasure and inspiration going back to them regularly and looking at the work of great photographers. I collect work of all types and while I have been known for my nature and landscape work over the years, some of my favourite books are of Portraits, Documentary, Fine Art and Fashion photography as well as these two genres.

I am inspired by photographers who try to change things. Those who look and then see things differently or who shape their images in a new or different way. A great photograph is something that makes us look twice and want to keep on looking, even if it is a simple portrait.

We don’t need to copy the work of other photographers, just take inspiration from them. Importantly, we need to think in a different way. A great fashion photo can be the inspiration for your nature photography or we can use a great portrait as a basis for a beautiful still life. Everything is interchangeable.

This selection contains some of the wonderful books I have collected. To me they are things of immense beauty and seeing these fabulous collections in print format far outweighs what I get from the same images on a computer screen. Take a look and I hope you will get to enjoy some of these books by having them in your own collection.

"Present" By Stephan Van Fleteren

If you aspire to being a good or even great photographer and you only buy one book in your lifetime, this should be it!! Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren is the real deal. He has been documenting what he sees for more than three decades and has covered a multitude of subjects in that time. Much of his work has been commissioned work for magazines and newspapers but he seems to photograph constantly and does so much personal work it’s hard to think that he ever doesn’t have a camera in his hand.

The book is huge. It runs to nearly 500 pages and is printed in large format at —– but it’s also huge in its expanse of subject matter. There are some difficult images with scenes of death and destruction from Rwanda and images of down and out characters from his home country. But the subjects are always treated with compassion and understanding.

His more recent work contains a lot of portraiture and his ability to capture people is second to none. His personal project of photographing dead creatures he has found is wonderful also. There are landscapes, cityscapes and fun personal projects and all are captivating.

This book is simply awesome!

Service 2

Another simply sublime book that touches all the senses. Salgado sees beautifully in monochrome and shares the amazing places, spaces and creatures of our planet with us in a way that makes it them art in themselves. Indeed he has done this in his other extraordinary books, “Workers”, “Migrations” and “Children” to name a few but Genesis is one you should definitely own.

“In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” ―Sebastião Salgado
